Managing multiple online bank accounts safely

Tuesday September 30, 2008

If you organise your own online bank accounts as well as those of your family, then it is important that you keep track of the details of each account. The problem with one person handling the online bank accounts of multiple people is that it can lead to each of the account becoming more susceptible to online bank account scams, so be careful not to make common mistakes.

Having to remember multiple customer numbers, names and passwords can be difficult, but writing them down exposes everyone to fraud if someone finds your details. However, using the same details for every account so that you just need to remember one set of details is also a mistake, as if one of your online bank accounts is defrauded, they can all be defrauded. To keep your online bank accounts safe, it is important that you minimise repeat use of details, try to record as few details as possible, and make sure that you do not forget about any of the online bank accounts you need to manage.

As few people have perfect memories, many bank accounts have security questions to ask you if you forget your details. Make sure that these questions are difficult to guess and that the answers are not publicly listed anywhere. The answers to your security questions should not be well known, as otherwise people could easily access your savings accounts and you may fall victim to online bank account scams.
