Options other than online bank accounts

14 August 2008

Online bank accounts have many advantages over other savings options, as they provide an interesting middle ground between everyday savings accounts and term deposits. While online bank accounts may not allow users to withdraw funds without interest penalties, they generally have decent interest rates. Everyday savings accounts and bank accounts will often not earn interest, but instead offer free withdrawals and transactions.

Online bank accounts are more flexible than term deposits in that money can be withdrawn when you need it without penalties beyond the current interest period possibly being forfeited, but they tend to have a lower interest rate. Term deposits require a large amount of money to be committed for a reasonably long amount of time in order to earn the higher interest rate, though. If you are saving in order to have capital available for investment when stock markets are looking to rise again, you may find that online bank accounts give you the flexibility you need to react to changing conditions while still earning a reasonably high level of interest.
